Module: General Education

This module provides insight into the structure of the Estonian education system.

This module can be presented in 2 ways:

A. Estonia has a comprehensive schooling system where it is mandatory for all students to attend school from age 7 to 17. General education is divided into pre-school (age 2–6), basic (primary and secondary) school (grades 1–9) and upper secondary school (grades 10–12).

Estonian school system is noted for its high equity. We are proud of the equal opportunities offered to all students regardless of their background – this is the backbone of our education.

In this module you will:

  • learn how pre-school, basic and upper secondary education are organized – receive an overview of the system (ISCED 0–4);
  • get to know why Estonian students are among the best performing students in the world and what recent studies have revealed;
  • learn about current objectives and challenges in the field of education in Estonia.

Duration: 1.5 hrs

B. Since 1991, when Estonia restored its independence from the Soviet Union, the country has been working on improiving its education system in order to align it with the new demands of our changed socio-economic situation as well as with global changes.

In this module you will:

  • find out about the lessons we have learned from policies and reforms in education over the past 25 years. What aspects have helped Estonia to become a high performing country in PISA?
  • Get a picture of the Estonian school environment, student well-being and other relevant factors in education.

Duration: 1.5 hrs
