The topic of this module is CLIL – content and language integrated learning.
CLIL is an educational approach where subjects, or parts of subjects, are taught through a foreign language with dual-focused aims, the learning of the content and the simultaneous mastering of a foreign language.
Since the end of 1990s, Estonia has used and developed a Language Immersion Programme to teach people a second language, where the language being taught is used specifically for instruction purposes. The language immersion method originated in Canada.
In Estonia, the Language Immersion Programme is mostly implemented in Russian-language kindergartens and schools, where the target language is Estonian based on the national curriculum. The language immersion method has proven to be highly successful in the process of integrating non-Estonian speakers and is now referred to as a “success” in the education system of Estonia.
In this module, we will provide you with:
- an overview of the Language Immersion Programme in Estonia;
- its implementation in kindergartens and schools;
- the two-way immersion model focusing on two target languages – Estonian and Russian;
- the results of monitoring and research throughout the implementation period.
