Language immersion is one of the most efficient techniques used in bilingual language education. In language immersion, at least 50% of the studying takes place in the foreign language. Therefore, the Estonian language immersion programme gives children with another home language the opportunity to learn Estonian via taking part in activities and studies in Estonian.
Immersion does not negatively affect the child’s ability to speak his or her mother tongue. The Estonian language immersion programme takes into account the best pedagogical practices, international experiences and different cultural backgrounds of the students.
In Estonia, language immersion starts in kindergarten or at the first or second stage of basic school studies.
Innove organizes language immersion courses and offers counseling for teachers and education officials of kindergartens and schools involved in the immersion programme. Our regional methodological centers support local kindergartens which use Russian as a language of instruction in teaching Estonian via immersion. We also prepare language immersion teaching and learning materials. We are continuously developing our immerson programme and implementing the quality system.
The Association of Parents for the Language Immersion Program (KLL) is a good partner for institutions involved in the immersion program.
